Having a career you enjoy is different than going to a job you dislike. The difference between the two can make your either a joy or unpleasant. Staying focused on an ultimate position you want to have in your career will help you learn things and meet people that will help you move forward. If you are tired of feeling stuck, it may be time to reevaluate how you are investing in you!

You can begin by setting both short and long term goals. What do you want to have accomplished at the end of this month, or year? Which position do you want to retire from? If you are not goal oriented, it will be hard to think about a concrete direction.

Where do your interests lay? Your day job may consist of selling bedding collection and other linens, whereas you may be interested in actually designing quality linens. The job you have now that pays your bills and feeds you is not the same position you have to keep for the rest of your life. If you are unfulfilled with your job, think about changing career paths.

Figure out where your niche is. When you are passionate about something, you most likely have a talent for it and have many strong, marketable traits. Maybe you’ve discovered your passion while designing your full loft bed. Maybe your knack is in interior design. Be aware of what your passions are, and match your career with what you care about.

If you are certainly ready to stop daydreaming about your sanyo rice cooker while at work, it may be time to concoct a plan. So, you know you want to be an interior designer. What do you have to do to get there? What are the educational qualifications you need? Network with people in that field and get a feel for what it actual takes to become a successful interior designer (or whatever other profession you are interested in).

Create a plan of action that is specific. Think of it as your step by step guide to your goal. This puts your career goal into a realistic perspective. It transforms it from a dream into a realistic goal.

If you want a great career, you will have to work for it. The first step is realizing that your goal is attainable. Adjust your plan as you go and appreciate your efforts. As long as you continue to go after your dream it is only a matter of time before you will achieve it.
